U.S. Unveils Charges in Alleged Iranian Plot Targeting Trump and U.S. Journalist

The U.S. government has charged Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national, with planning an assassination attempt against Donald Trump, allegedly at the behest of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Shakeri, now believed to be in Iran, is accused of creating a plan to kill Trump before the recent presidential election. Iran has denied these accusations, calling them "completely baseless."

Alongside Shakeri, two Americans, Carlisle Rivera and Jonathon Loadholt, are also implicated. They allegedly collaborated with Shakeri in a plot to assassinate a U.S.-based journalist known for speaking against Iran’s government. According to prosecutors, the journalist had already faced multiple threats and had been under FBI protection after her attackers reportedly came to her home.

The alleged plot included plans to target not only Trump but also prominent pro-Israel business figures in New York, as well as a broader attack on Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka. The Justice Department charged Shakeri, Rivera, and Loadholt with murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, which carry severe penalties.

The charges add strain to already tense U.S.-Iran relations, with Iranian officials warning that such accusations could deepen diplomatic conflicts.
